LET'S FACE IT, YOUR KIDS ARE STUPID

*note: swimming in the east river can be very hazardous to your health. . . especially if you cut your leg open on a rock in the water. it lands you in the hospital with one hell of a funky infection. i just feel bad for the kids that were drinking the water on a dare. i wonder whatever happened to them. . .

below the tracks are cd-sized files (jpg or pdf) for printing out your own booklet (both inside and outside). the important part is that the INSIDE file has the song list, that being: the artist on the cd, the song, and the original artist. . . however they are all out of order. so download it and match them up as i post 'em. when it's all said and done you should have a pretty good 22 track mix cd of cover songs. i did not try to select obscure of difficult covers, i picked what i did based simply on what i liked. so while some will be very easy (and possibly already on your computer), it is intended to be a mix cd first and foremost. if there's a good response i may resurrect cover comps #1 and #2. #4 isn't far behind either. . . if for some reason anyone has trouble reading the song list, let me know and i'll just list it below. leave your guesses in the comments.

RIP Johnnie Cochran. actually i really just loved the sound bite they got today from OJ yelling at reporters to get off his property.

i was in a really crappy mood last night, till i watched that movie "Ray" (as in Charles). now i just feel like a lazy worthless bum. but at least i'm not in a bad mood anymore.

congratulations to Creeper on his senior thesis. not many kids rock their senior show having sold most of the work before it hits the walls. . . but that's how Creeper likes it. and his mom made home-baked cookies for the opening too. mom-cookies, monsters, and occasional stabbings. . . that's my kind of opening.

i know this isn't very important, but did you know that Castro fled to brooklyn and is hiding out as my roommate? it's kinda weird, but he doesn't complain about having to smoke his cigars on the fire escape so i guess things are fine. although the constant mumbling and stroking his beard bit does get annoying.

so apparently suckapants.com is rated as porn? that's hottt.

and a filter for your tv specifically to block the right-wing nut-job news service fox news? yes. i don't know how it works (or if it works). but it's pure genius. i'd buy one if i ever watched tv.

COULDN'T BREAK YOUR HEART WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER

barr1.jpg

anyone go the the Tracy And The Plastics show last night? was it me or did BARR really blow everyone else out of the water? Tracy wasn't really on her game last night, so maybe it's not a fair comparison. . . although i can say that if they had charged more than $7 for that show i would feel ripped-off. better keep it cheap if your headliner isn't even going to give it much effort.

Critical Mass tonight people! although i know practically none of you will be there. . . which is a shame. but perhaps when the warmer weather arrives we can rectify this. after all, bikes are the new sports cars.

okay so i wanted this friday post to be an upbeat one, but i ignored something that actually is pretty important, even if it isn't much fun. below is the latest news about the ongoing NYPD's campaign to take out Critical Mass, and now Time's Up! as well.

(From Time's Up!) Legal Update 03/23/2005:

Yesterday, the City of New York served Time's Up!, and individually Bill DiPaola, Brandon Neubauer, Leah Rorvig, and Matthew Roth with a new lawsuit, brought in state court. In the lawsuit, the city is seeking an injunction against Time's Up! and the aforementioned individuals to prevent us from advertising or promoting the meeting place for the Critical Mass at Union Square, and to prevent us or anyone in concert with us from riding in the streets in Critical Mass style without obtaining a permit from the NYPD. It claims that any event whatsoever with 20 or more persons requires a permit.

TIME'S UP! responds that this case is ridiculous, selective enforcement. Everyday there are hundreds of events that goes on with more than 20 people without a permit. Furthermore, we advertise hundreds of events each year promoting sustainable environmental solutions. Some of the events we organize and others we are just passing along the word. Our right to do so is protected under the First Amendment.

We are hoping for a friendly outcome that would benefit the people of NYC and we are actively seeking funds to defend the right to assemble and the right to free speech, without a permit. Still We Ride!

*RANDOM UPDATE: to everyone who was at the Glass House party last night, please stop sending me photos of the naked people there. they're gross and almost got me fired. thanks.

PENNY-PINCHERS AIN'T NOTHIN' TO BE PROUD

glasshousecorner.jpg

so i may be blowing one of the best (and new) secrets in brooklyn, but The Free Store is having a benefit show/party tonight. The Free Store is just what it says, it's a store where everything is free. it basically functions like a thrift store, subsisting off donations. . . but since everything is given to it for free, they don't charge a mark up on it's way out the door. i thought it would be kind of all sorts of broken crap and found junk. but i was wrong. my one friend got a great pair of jeans (diesel) there, along with some sweaters. another friend found some hot shoes and kitchen stuff. i personally dropped off a bag of shoes i had collected over time (ex-roommates leftover stuff, etc) and found a pretty sweet brown-grey hoodie. so i am going to strongly promote this place, because the more people donate the better it is. i think it has the potential to be a really great resource.

so the party info is as follows:
-- first wave = Country, Folk & Ragtime show with Jeffery Lewis, Micah "Blue" Smaldone, Death Vessel, Friends, Andy Boise, and Our Poor Neighbors.
Thursday, March 24th at 7pm
Glass House: 38 S. 1st St. at Kent (L train to Bedford)
$6 and free drinks before 9 pm
(the flyer is a great drawing of a hobo flying along on a track bike through the countryside)

-- second wave = Extravaganza Of Ridiculous Proportions: a cyborg masquerade dance party with dancing cyborg pandas, robot battles, circus performers and cupcakes. DJs Suggested D & Lady Vitamins.
Thursday, March 24th at 12pm
same place
$5 with a cyborg-themed mask, $6 without

Proceeds go to sustaining The Free Store
(131 Grand St. at Berry, open everyday 2-9pm)

SCREAM, CRY, LIVE, DIE

hisham.jpg

so i saw mr. Hisham Bharoocha (of x-Black Dice and current Pixeltan fame) perform at tonic the other night. i wasn't entirely sure what to expect, i remember seeing Black Dice at house shows before they kind of went all druggy-whale-sounds. . . those were always my favorite. a combination of long drawn-out distorted vocals, electronic and guitar sounds combining and playing off each other as they slowly built into a huge crescendo, and the intense merciless drumming keeping it solidly driving forward. but then they kind of went even farther into the spacey-weird-influenced-by-new-age direction, and then they got rid of their drummer. . . about a year later hisham is playing by himself, and picking up where those house shows left off. the man was playing a drum kit, a bass guitar, singing, working a vocal distortion/sample box. . . all at the same time. it was really intense. i'm not going to pretend he doesn't have a few bugs to work out (playing 3 instruments at once does have a few technical challenges), but when he does he may very well resurrect what (in my mind) was Black Dice's pinnacle.

MEMOREXED MEMORIES

t-shoes1.jpg

in case you ever wondered why i don't recommend buying things from Amazon. . .

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MP3:

okay so i like cover songs, that much has been established. several years ago i decided to start putting together cd compilations of amazing covers that i came across over the course of a year. for the first few years i did them with custom hand-painted cds and full-color double-sided booklets and just gave/mailed them to my friends. it was very very time consuming, but fun. however, it seems that a lot of these cover comps didn't survive the trials and tribulations of people's lives, so i don't really feel like spending another month hunched over a table painting cds and cutting inserts. instead i'm going to post this year's cover comp on suckapants. and although i've been at this for four years, we are only up to #3. the chaos that consumed my life after my father's motorcycle accident caused the release of #3 to be significantly delayed. #4 is pretty much compiled though, so the gap in between the two might not be too long. there is also one other thing about these cover comps i should mention. . . inside the booklet i included the artist on the cd, the song title, and the original artist. . . but totally out of order. so it's a bit of a puzzle too match up who is covering who. it's not really that difficult, but i like to make people work a little. . . so yeah, i should start posting "Cover Compilation: Volume 3" next week. in the meantime, here's a track from a young band (literally young, 11 and 9 years old) composed of two sisters. they are called Smoosh and hail from seattle. oh yeah, and they make your bad-ass junior high self (with your hammer pants and slap bracelets and New Kids buttons) look like a fool.

so while i am a fan of Tv On the Radio, they did not deliver the best cover on the Daniel Johnston tribute album (see previous post). that honor probably goes to Bright Eyes. while the inherently similar song-stylings of the two artists makes Conor Oberst an obvious choice, i have to give him more credit than that. i think it's almost more difficult to do a good cover of someone that is already pretty close to home to begin with. Conor is able to add something to an already great song without departing from what he (or Daniel Johnston) do well. give it a listen and tell me if i am right or wrong on this one.

Daniel Johnston is a genius. most respectable musicians seem to know this. however more than a few music appreciators don't seem to be clued in to this fact. a recent release called "Discovered Covered: The Late Great Daniel Johnston" appears to be finally giving him some due. it's a two-cd deal, one being covers by an excellent cross-section of admirers, and the other cd being a "best of" of sorts. it's pretty much an essential cd, and by far one of my top five from last year. so here is a track from one of my favorite bands to hear covers by, Tv On the Radio.

Black Label at the Scope art fair. i officially suck because i ended up missing all the fun due to excessive "security measures" (ie. not letting anyone back in after like 10 pm, even with the appropriate arm band/pass). so only a small sampling of the night exists. i still am mad that i was not there to witness Madagascar Institute's instrument-case flame-throwers, and when they dropped the entire ceiling down on the crowd. and the nudity and dancing, i missed that too. i suck.

however, tonight is the debut screening of antlered girl's new film she worked on, "I Had An Abortion" at the Brecht Forum (451 West St.). it's been getting a lot of press/buzz/controvery, especially with the t-shirts (just in Glamour magazine). you should go.

some friends of mine are nerds, but the cool kind. they do a blog about electronics, design, and the applications thereof (theoretical and actual). it's called delta-sigma (apparently some sort of programmer's engineering term, not the fraternity). check it out, i was surprised how interesting they could make these things i normally don't ever think about (do you know all about the crazy "bone fone?" neither did i). or maybe it's cause i know nick and can picture him looking like a mouse and saying funny things. either way.

STUDENT COUNTER-RECRUITERS CHARGED WITH FELONY ASSAULT

Three undergraduate students at the City College of
New York (CCNY) were arrested Wednesday in the course
of a peaceful protest against military recruiters.
Hadas Thier, Nick Bergreen, and Justino Rodriguez,
along with approximately a dozen other protesters
attended a job fair organized by the college, and
stood up in front of a National Guard recruitment
table chanting anti-war slogans. Private security and
campus peace officers immediately surrounded the
protesters, pushed them into an empty hallway outside
of the job fair, closed the hall door and assaulted
two protesters and arrested a third who was taking
pictures. The two students who were assaulted are now
being charged with felony assault, and the third with
obstruction of a government administrator.

"Counter-recruitment" has become a national issue
(USATODAY "Counter-recruiters shadowing the military"
3/7/5), and it's working. Between these efforts, and
general disagreement about the war, recruitment is
down - according to a 3/6/5 Reuters report, "The
regular Army is 6 percent behind its year-to-date
recruiting target, the Reserve is 10 percent behind,
and the Guard is 26 percent short."

After similar counter-recruitment efforts have taken
off from New York to Seattle, the military has clearly
become concerned. At William Patterson University in
New Jersey an activist was arrested for simply handing
out counter-recruitment leaflets. Twice last semester,
CCNY student protesters drove military recruiters off
the campus with peaceful protests. This time campus
security was ready. "We didn't even get through one
round of chanting," according to Tiffany Paul, a
junior at CCNY and a member of the Campus Anti-War
Network, who was one of the protesters. "We were
completely peaceful, it was the officers who were
violent."

When Mr. Rodriguez was being arrested, his head was
slammed into the wall. He called out "look what
they're doing to me!" According to Ms. Paul, to
silence him one of the guards pulled Mr. Rodriguez's
hood over his head and slammed his head into the wall
again.

"He just stood on the guy," remembers Mark Turner, a
staff member at CCNY, recalling the manner in which
Mr. Bergreen was subdued by a private security guard,
Mr. Robertson. "His foot was on his back, after he had
tackled him. Private security are not supposed to
touch us."

Ms. Thier was arrested simply for taking pictures.
Several witnesses recall that the guards were pulling
on her hair. Juan Alduey remembers that the guards
pushed Ms. Thier when she tried to give a statement to
students who began filming the event. "I'm being
arrested for exercising my right to free speech" Mr.
Alduey recalled.

THE UNRECORDED LIFE ISN'T WORTH LIVING

escalatorred.jpg

i used to take photos like this all the time. . . i don't take photos like this so much anymore.

on a somewhat related note, a friend of mine has started his own photo-diary thing. it's interesting, and has links to some other great photographers as well. it's nice to know that some of the people who work at Vice are still human after all.

so here's something intriguing. a UK digital boy meets a jamaican dancehall queen under the project album Two Cultures Clash. hot stuff ensues.

WEARING YOUR WOLF ON YOUR SLEEVE

browngatewall.jpg

for all you who skipped out on the Exit Art opening, you missed a hell of a good time. no one got hurt (that bad) on the indoor trash-sledding installation. the exhibition itself is pretty solid and one of the better-executed shows i've seen in a while. i highly recommend making the trek to check it out while it's still up.

also saw Superwolf (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy + Matt Sweeney) do an intimate little set at some coffee shop in brooklyn. it was crowded as hell but sounded amazing, except for the dumbasses working there who kept talking and draining the coffee maker and washing glasses during the set. . . rude dumbasses. but the tour t-shirts they were selling? very hot.

oh yeah, and does anyone know how to do an RSS feed to a regular domain when you're publishing through blogspot?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MP3:

so i wanted to post something from Superwolf, but i left it all at home. so instead i'll just post a great track from another band with "wolf" in the title, Wolf Parade. yet another great canadian import preparing to take us over the minute we drop our guard.

IT'S ON 'CAUSE I SAID SO!

leotardlaugh.jpg

happy friday and whatnot. i've been working 2 jobs all week till the wee hours of the morn and i feel like a train wreck right now. but if i can help make a friend famous, it's all worth it.

and on saturday don't miss this opening if you can help it (will there be indoor trash sledding? but of course).

see you monday, i have some sleeping to do. . .

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MP3:

i'm about as sharp as a sledgehammer today, so i'll keep it brief. here's some more great brit grime from Lady Shystie. just when i think i'm too exhausted to make the trek through gowanus all the way to the G train, and should just curl up in some out-of-the-way doorway somewhere. . . this pops on my ipod, and i smile and keep walking.

LOST ALONG THE WAY

criminalizegreed.jpg

rarely have i been in a place where time stood still like waiting for the J/M/Z train late at night. the other denizens of the platform mill about, looking lost and forlorn. . . until there is the faintest hint of screeching metal that might herald the arrival of a train. the look of hopeful surprise on their faces is disconcerting, but only if you still believe public transit shouldn't suck. if someone dropped to their knees praising the god of underground transportation and sacrificed a goat at the first sight of the J train, i wouldn't be all that surprised. and this is coming from someone who lived on the G train for seven years.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MP3:

okay, i feel bad because i came across this track on an mp3 blog this past week. . . but damn if i can remember where. i hate posting something and not giving credit when due. . . buuuuuuut, i kinda don't have a choice. this is probably one of the most compelling things i have heard since The Mars Volta's "Frances The Mute." i can't remember the last time i played something, stopped what i was doing halfway through to listen, and then played it another three times in a row just to let it sink in. i'm not sure how to describe it, but we need more music like this. and if anyone knows where i might have come across this, please leave it in the comments.
* UPDATE: so the very same blog that i found this gem on came across this post and enlightened my slipping-in-my-old-age mind. thanks to Said The Gramophone for that, and this. . .

SAND SUN & SLOBBER

greecespit.jpg

come to greece. . . where giant children will spit on you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MP3:

i'm feelin' a bit silly today, so here's a pretty odd track. . . a smooth jazz cover of The Neptunes "Frontin'." apparently Pharrell and the crew were pretty stoked on it, so they agreed to produce the next album by Jamie Cullum. thanks to nick for the tip.
*UPDATE: i listened to some of Jamie Cullum's other songs, and it was absolute torture. please, for your own good, stay away!

NYC SECEDE FROM THE UNION

aristondance1.jpg
aristondance2.jpg
aristondance3.jpg

yeah this weekend was fun, even if not being able to find Rothko cost me seeing one of my favorite (and recently resurrected) bands, Pixeltan. saw kid 606 instead. it was. . . interesting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MP3:

i've been waiting for a good excuse to post this, but it doesn't look like i'm going to get one. back in the late 90s i was a big "screamo" fan, and sometimes i still get a craving that only some real vocal-cord-shredding goodness can satisfy. so here's a track from one of my favorite bands of that era, Saetia. definitely not going to be for everyone, but just think of it as music for the moment. . . cause we all probably feel like this at times.
